All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Post Harvest Engineering and Technology
Introduction
Post Harvest Engineering and Technology constitutes the major share of the total agricultural production system. The importance of this multidisciplinary subject is well recognized due to its potential to bring the expected socio-economical changes in the rural society by eliminating avoidable losses and proper processing of food grains. The ability to generate rural employment by means of evolving agricultural based rural industries is an another dimension. Realizing the gravity of the problem and the importance of this field, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi formulated the scheme named “All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Harvest and Post-Harvest technology”. The Scheme was sanctioned in fourth five-year plan in the year 1972 and initially ten centres throughout the country were established to cater the need of different regions of the country. The AICRP on Post Harvest and Technology, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola was among the first ten centres started in the year 1972. In year 2015-16, the scheme was renamed as “AICRP on Post Harvest Engineering and Technology”.
- To develop location and crop/commodity specific post-harvest technologies for minimization of quantitative and qualitative losses to produce of agriculture and allied sectors.
- To adapt and develop improved post-harvest processes and equipment for value addition to food grains and other produce at rural threshold for higher income and generation of rural employment.
- To develop processes and equipment for economic utilization on bio-wastes and by-products.
- To conduct operational research and multi-location trials on developed technologies to identify technical, financial, managerial and social constraints for better market acceptability to technologies.
- To establish need based Agro-Processing Centres (APCs) to assure better economic returns to the farmers from their marketable surpluses in the production catchments.
- To assess, refine and transfer proven technologies.

Transfer of Technologies
A number of post harvest engineering based technologies have been developed under this project and successfully demonstrated at university, villages as well as at user’s sites through technology training, demonstrations and Commercialization .
